Wakayama is found south of Osaka on the Kii peninsular. It is a vast area of outstanding natural beauty. The region is and the home to numerous national treasures and UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The region has an abundance of rivers and beautiful coastline scenery set to a backdrop of densely forested mountains. The Kuroshio Current brings warmer water from further south in the Pacific transporting tropical water northward sustaining the coral reefs in Wakayama, the northernmost coral reefs in the world. In Japan Wakayama is most famous as the home of the 'mikan' (mandarin orange).
